This assignment asks you to write a short research note using qualitative data. The purpose of this assignment is to have you experience hand-on practices of collecting qualitative data from ethnography, interview, or contents analysis methods and analyzing them by using the techniques that you have learned from the textbook. First, you pose a sociological question that can be explored in a qualitative way (i.e. why and how). Second, you choose one of a qualitative research method that suits best for your question. Third, you conduct a brief research using your question and method. The recommended requirement for each method is 2-3 hours for ethnography, 2-3 persons for interview, 2-3 materials for content analysis, but you can be flexible depends on your situations. If you have health concerns for doing face-to-face interviews or on-site ethnographic observation, doing them online is OK. Third, you write a brief research note with the following structure: – Introduction: a brief introduction describing the research question, definitions and explanations of the concepts relevant to your question. – Procedure: a detailed description of the research procedure (how, when and where the data were collected, how data were recorded, the roles of the observers, etc.). * Search for a couple of research articles using your choice of method and see how they write the method section. – Findings: a summary of your analysis and findings relevant to your research question.
