Read two cases from Stoner and McFaul and write a short essay (1000 words) that discusses the transitions in these two cases. (You can either write an explicitly comparative essay that compares and contrasts your two chosen cases. Or you can treat each case separately without explicitly comparing them. If you choose the second strategy, include a paragraph that explains what we can learn by considering the two together). In your essay, please address the following questions: What are the decisive factors that explain how and why these transitions to democracy occurred the way they did? (Consider the roles of institutions and actors, values and interests. What values and/or decisions of actors were crucial? What rules, customs, power structures, or other constraints were important? ) What accounts for the successes and failures, or strengths and weaknesses, of each of these transitions?
