Format5-6 single-sided, double-spaced pages in 12 point Times New Roman, with one-inch margins on all sides. Please number your pages.TaskFor the past 15 years, the Atlanta Times has published a special magazine every weekend devoted to covering diverse sport cultures in the city. For the first 10 years of its existence, this magazine was extremely popular. But the editors of the magazine are concerned because readership is down and their in-house research suggests that the public is disappointed with the sport coverage, especially as it relates to the athletic accomplishment of girls and women. In order to attract a wider range of readers and to gain more favorable reviews, the editors are soliciting opinions from experts to help them understand issues related to representation, sport, and gender. You will put together a report for the Atlanta Times that contains the following information:1) As an expert in the field, you need to demonstrate that you understand issues related to gender and media representation. Drawing on the following 2 sources, summarize what they say about gender and media representations in sport in 2 pages. You may draw on additional peer-reviewed literature that you find as well.Cooky, Cheryl, Michael A. Messner, & Michela Musto. ““It’s dude time!” A quarter century of excluding women’s sports in televised news and highlight shows.” Communication & Sport 3.3 (2015): 261-287.Martin, A. & McDonald, M. (2012). Covering women’s sport? An analysis of Sports Illustrated covers from 1987-2009 and ESPN The Magazine covers from 1998-2009. Graduate Journal of Sport, Exercise & Physical Education Research, 1, 81-97.2) Then you will conduct your own content analysis of popular magazine covers and present your findings in 2 pages. The data for your analysis will come from one of the digitized collections associated with ESPN: The Magazine OR Sports Illustrated and cover the time period of 1 year.Sports Illustrated The Magazine…Choose 1 full year of issues to analyze from your magazine of choice (you must choose a full calendar year between 2010 and 2017; e.g. all issues from 2012 or all issues from 2015).You may draw on the methods outlined by Martin and McDonald (2012) on pages 87-89. Your analysis will involve recording if a man or woman is featured on the cover of each issue, and whether the cover athlete is portrayed in an “active” or “passive” pose. Martin and McDonald explain how they distinguish between active and passive poses on pages 88-89. You and your partner may develop a spreadsheet to keep track of your analysis and include it in your final report.3) Then using 1-2 pages, you will conduct an in-depth, “critical reading” of 1 cover drawn from your data set. See Martin and McDonald (2012, starting on p. 92) for a more detailed description of what counts as a “critical reading”. Your goal is to choose a magazine cover that you think will help you to discuss the wider social and political significance of what is at stake in issues related to gender and media representation. Please include a small visual of your magazine cover in your report. Based on your research, provide the Atlanta Times with 2-3 recommendations about how to improve their coverage of sport.Questions to help you get started:How were your results similar or different to those in the required readings?Based on your reading of Sports Illustrated/ESPN: The Magazine, has the amount of coverage focused on women’s sports improved since 2009?Do these sports magazine covers that you studied depict women actively in approximately the same proportion as active men?Are there any other trends that you noticed about the coverage? Were there significant events in sport in the year you analyzed that may have influenced the type of coverage you observed? What is the purpose of this assignment?
